Some Kind Of Blue

The Prince of Darkness
Was beaten by the police today
His khaki suit and tie baring, crimson splat
From his head struck by a cop at Birdland
His blood gushing like oil from breached steel
Tragic ballads of yesterday’s whispering moon dreams
I still hear Morpheus skipping rocks across worlds
If I were a bell I’d toll for gone gone gone oceans

He liked it straight, no chaser please
In 1959, shit was bad but not like today
Bleached, broken and blanched reefs
Flotsam jilted mermaids’ love for sale
Single use straws stabbed floating
Athwart in bleeding nostrils of turtles
Like fading trumpet diminuendos
Stranded in islands of garbage

The deep azure hued waves
Strangulated, dappled and bruised
Like the distended, caught neck of Shiva
After drinking our ocean’s poison
Or the attenuating wistful ending
Of a 32 bar Mile’s trumpet phrase
Accompanied to solos of dead species
Blown lipped, extinct, no applause

Bye bye blackbirds’ tummies of Coke caps
Oil covered pelicans snatch pill bottles
Amidst rancid floating piles of trash
Bellies of whales stuffed full of plastic
Out of nowhere came crabbers and nets
Ladybirds cull through the murky wake
Their brass squawks mourn by the fantails
Blue in green haze turns sky graven jade

Red tides swell, rupture and ricochet
Like the way Bill Evan’s fingers moved
Six pack cuffed and bound rostrums
Turned up across green dolphin straits
Parbuckled onto lazarets of trawlers
Or how octopuses get caught in nets
Confusing disposable bags for food
Tangled up, breathless and sapphirine
Split open and bleeding some kind of blue

  1. That is some mad jazz. I hear Miles and Bill weaving sad deep blue in toxic green. I hope this startles the world awake as much as it shook me.
